Staff and Students raise over $3,000 for cancer

Staff and students joined forces to raise over $3,000 in Terry Fox Foundation pledges in order to see 6 of their teachers, the Student Council President and a fellow high school student have their heads shaved at the ‘Balding for Dollars’ event held at the Monday morning formal assembly on Oct. 26th.  Stylists, Paola & Lenelle of ‘The Cutting Room’ donated their time and expertise to help our donors lose their locks.

Our Grade 11 students have just returned from their Outdoor Ed week at the Bamfield Marine Science Centre where they were involved in the dredging of the ocean floor to study species from the Pacific Ocean as well as other data collection activities. 

Grade 2’s raise $318.67 at bake sale for Mexican Schools Project

The Grade 2 class held their bake sale last week and raised $318.67 to support the Mexico School’s Project.  This figure equates to supporting 63 students or 16 teachers for a full year!  The proceeds have been forwarded to Mexico School’s Project Hero, Bob Johnson, who is intent on finding a project which will benefit the most from these funds.  We will update this website with photos from Bob showing us the project(s) that our students have helped to bring to fruition.  Way to go Mrs. Graham and our Grade 2 students and thank you Bob for being such a wonderful inspiration of global citizenship and how one person CAN make a difference in this world!

The Grade 2 class recently had a visit from a “Superhero” named Bob Johnson, who has been helping children across Mexico for the last 20 years! He has been going to extremely remote areas, where children don’t have schools, electricity…all of the things that we are so lucky to have, and raising money to build schools and homes and provide school supplies to the children and teachers. After the presentation, the children discussed what they learned and feelings they had (see the attached photo). As Action is a big part of the IB curriculum and philosophy I told them that when people learn about these types of situations and think about how they feel, it often leads to them taking action. I asked the children if they thought we could take action and they came up with the idea of raising money via a bake sale. We wrote a class email to Mrs. Fitzgerald, asking for permission, and she granted it on 1 request: that we make a commitment to eating healthy for 1 week. The children have risen to the challenge and have been giving up certain items from the lunches (food high in sugar). Don’t worry, I have labeled each item and they will be returned to your child on Friday. It is actually quite amazing how little has had to be handed over, as the Grade 2 student’s snacks and lunches are of excellent nutritional quality!

This entire process has also enabled the students to learn about goal setting and decision making, which are a part of the Grade 2 BC curriculum learning outcomes.

Terry Fox Run

Early Learning Centre staff with infants and toddlers, Aspengrove Students, Staff and Parents joined in the spirit of Terry Fox’s Legacy in the annual Terry Fox Run to keep the dream alive.  Pledges will continue to be collected until October 15, 2009 as many teachers are participating in the ‘Balding for Dollars’ event in support of the Terry Fox Foundation.  Teachers have ‘named their price’ and Student Council members are busily collecting pledges to meet the targets which will result in as many teachers losing their hair as possible!
