Why should I send my child to a independent school instead of public school?

Here are the reasons parents often give for enrolling their child at Aspengrove:

  • Small class sizes.
There are no more than 20 students per class, giving teachers a chance to build meaningful relationships that are so important to a child’s well-being and achievement.
  • High academic standards.
We apply the curriculum of the International Baccalaureate Programme, one of the world’s most rigorous and highly esteemed education programmes. Aspengrove is fully accredited as an IB World School for their Primary Years and Middle Years Programmes.
  • Individual attention.
Individual attention is at the core of Aspengrove’s curriculum.  Through regular communication and ongoing assessment by teachers, a child’s learning profile and specific needs are identified.  We set enrichment goals and address areas for academic support, we then review the plan throughout the year.
  • Involved parents.
We’re always impressed with the commitment and involvement of fathers, mothers and grandparents to our students’ education.  From reading aloud to students, working alongside us in community service projects to working on Committees and the Board of Directors, Aspengrove families are role models for our students.
  • Well-rounded approach.
In 2004, 32 students hiked through the woods and learned about biodiversity before clearing brush to create hiking trails in Nanaimo’s new Linley Valley Park.  In 2008, students continue in their commitment to biodiversity on the school site as well as many of our surrounding natural areas.
  • Family-like atmosphere.
In our Big Buddy program, each older student is paired with a younger student. You’ll often see them greet each other with a hug or find them reading together.
  • Students are engaged, interested and having fun.
Curiosity, reflection and critical thinking are the foundation of our school philosophy and our motto: Spirit of Inquiry. Students don’t just memorize facts, they learn how to learn.
