Ken Lister brings over 40 years of experience as a professional performing musician and educator. His teaching background spans private and group lessons for learners from pre-teens to seniors, including 22 years as a faculty member in the music department at Vancouver Island University. Ken has also been a yoga teacher and studio manager, and holds a bachelor’s degree in psychology. A proud father and grandfather who loves spending time in nature, Ken believes in meeting each student where they are musically—nurturing their curiosity, adapting to their individual learning style, and supporting growth at their own pace. Voice Lessons
Somatic Voicework™ Lessons are structured in three parts. First – Assessment: I ask the student to sing simple patterns on various vowels to hear how their voice is currently functioning. This is a fact finding mission and the student is only required to sing however they sing, stand how they stand and, breathe how they breathe, so I can hear and see what presents itself. Second – Exercises for the body and voice: based on what I find, I design particular vocal exercises which aim to stabilize, strengthen and balance the aspects of the voice that need it. We will address posture and breathing with simple movements. All of the exercises are specific to the needs of the student and these constitute the “homework”. Third: Repertoire: the student may have an idea of songs they wish to sing and I encourage that. I may also suggest songs that I think are within their voice range and appropriate to their current skill set.
