At Aspengrove School, our vision is to become a world-class school for Central Vancouver Island. To help us achieve this, we’ve identified three strategic directions that define our path forward: Exemplary Experiences, Personalized Academic Excellence, and Global Leadership.
Why Experiences Matter
Experiences, in general, are at the heart of a student’s education. There is significant research that points to the idea that the quality of one’s education is directly related to the sum of all experiences – both positive and negative. As we aspire to become a world-class school, our focus on intentional, meaningful, and potentially transformative experiences is at the forefront of our work. Our first step was to hire someone whose primary focus was on our students’ experiences.
To lead this work, we created a new position – one we believe is the first of its kind in British Columbia – a Director of Student Experiences. We are thrilled to welcome Ms. Andrea Wyness into this role. Andrea is a long-time Aspengrove educator and has already made an impact in her new role. Before the school year began, teachers dedicated time to discuss every student – new and returning – ensuring we understood their needs from the very first day. From this work, we are beginning to define what “thriving” means at Aspengrove and to develop strategies to support students when they face challenges. We look forward to sharing more with families soon.
Building a Culture of Care and Involvement
Exceptional Experiences extend beyond the classroom. They are shaped by house games, co-curriculars, clubs, student government, assemblies, lunch routines, and our high-performance programs. These opportunities not only spark new interests but also help students build essential skills for working with others – an important foundation for Global Leadership.
The Aspengrove Way has now been introduced to all students and parents. This shared framework of care and respect is helping us create a positive school culture. We know not every experience will be perfect, but we are equipping students with the resilience and strategies to learn and grow – even from setbacks.
Looking Ahead
This is an exciting time for our school community. Throughout the year, we will continue to find new ways to challenge, engage, and inspire our students.
We encourage every child to get involved, embrace new opportunities, and live The Aspengrove Way—because every experience, big or small, contributes to who they become.
