Today, on Earth Day, we’re celebrating the release of Aspengrove’s 6th class of coho salmon.
Escorted by 95 students from Kindergarten, Grade 1, 8, 9, 11, and 12, our salmon were gently introduced to their new home in Bloods Creek, where they’ll continue to grow over the next year before heading to the ocean.
Over the past three months, students have observed the salmon’s development in a chilled tank in the hall of The Lookout. Along the way, they’ve learned about embryonic development, life cycles, ecological systems, and conservation. It’s been a chance to build knowledge, practice observation skills, and connect across grades—older students guiding younger ones, and vice versa.
On this Earth Day, we’re reminded of the importance of caring for the land and water around us. We’re grateful to continue a tradition of stewardship led by the Snaw’Naw’as and Snuneymuxw nations, and we look forward to welcoming our salmon back to Bloods Creek as adults in a few years’ time.
